CL1000P Round 2
February 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th
8:00pm
Off Center, 2211 Hidalgo Street
$10 / Special fundraising night
Friday Feb 3rd, $100 towards developing this new piece!
|
Rude Mechs is proud to present a
work-in-progress showing of CL1000P Round 2 (working title), sharing the
creation of our newest play.
So far, CL1000P is an interactive puzzle for the stage inspired by
alternative reality games, and the imaginary world built by the Brontës. You
may have attended our workshop production in December 2010 - if you did, you
will either be pleased or sad to know that most of that has been thrown out
and we have started pretty fresh.
This workshop production will introduce and explore some ideas we've been
working with: audience mobility through the piece, audience opt-in
interaction, puzzles, mystery, and acting within acting. We're looking for
your feedback: what\'s interesting, what's annoying, where should we go from
here as we work toward a full production in May?
Come play with us, have a drink, some marshmallows or popcorn. There will be
a talkback with the cast/audience every evening - so come and let us know
how we can make the play of your dreams.

International Bowl
Wednesday, Feb 1
7:00p
The Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex,
Austin, TX
|
On Feb. 1, 2012, the world’s best high
school-age players will return to Austin, Texas to play in USA Football’s
International Bowl.
The International Bowl is an annual competition matching the U.S. Under-19
National Team in football, composed of high school seniors, against the
World Team selected by the International Federation of American Football (Ifaf).
Including the United States, 62 countries spanning six continents possess a
national federation of sport dedicated solely to American football and
governed by Ifaf.
USA Football, the sport’s national governing body in the United States,
assembles and manages U.S. national teams for international competition.
The Feb. 1 contest coincides with National Signing Day, when Team USA and
World Team players will sign national letters of intent during a morning
breakfast event to play college football. Forty-six (46) eventual college
football players from both teams in last year’s game signed their letters of
intent in Austin this past February alongside family, friends and media.
A weeklong training camp for both teams also will be conducted in Austin
prior to the game. The United States defeated the World Team, 21-14, on Feb.
2 at Austin Westlake High School in the 2011 contest, which was telecast
internationally and made available to more than 100 million U.S. households
live and on tape delay.
Current Texas Longhorns RB Joe Bergeron, WR Jaxon Shipley and CB Josh Turner
played on Team USA in 2011. Bergeron earned the game’s Most Valuable Player
award with 118 yards and two TDs on 15 carries

Arts In Context taping with The
Relatives with The Isaac Sisters
Feb. 11
8 pm
KLRU Studio 6A
Free/RSVP required
|
This performance is free but an RSVP is
required.
Formed in the early 1970s by the Revs. Gean and Tommy West, The Relatives
cut three genre-bending singles during their decade-long run that were too
freaky for the church and too righteous for R&B radio. Though pioneers of an
utterly singular sound, the Relatives never made a splash outside of Dallas
and have remained virtually unknown even among serious record collectors.
But all of that is changing with recent performances at ACL Music Festival
in 2010 and backing Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears on the PBS television
series Austin City Limits last year. Joining them will be The Isaac Sisters
in their very first television appearance.

Austin Energy Regional Science
Festival
Volunteers Needed
Feb. 22-25
Palmer Events Center
|
Austin Energy is seeking volunteers to serve in
a variety of roles at the annual Austin Energy Regional Science Festival,
Feb. 22-25, 2012 at Palmer Events Center . This is Austin Energy's largest
community outreach event of the year with nearly 4,000 students and their
families in attendance. To help make the event a success, volunteers are
needed to judge student projects or provide general assistance.
Because judging is competitive in these divisions, Austin Energy needs
subject matter experts to evaluate the projects. About 7-10 projects are
assigned to each group of judges (typically consisting of 3 people).
Adults with a good general education and the
ability to talk to young children can judge these projects. The main purpose
of the fair is to encourage children to stay involved in science. If you are
interested in judging or volunteering, please register at the
website
The Austin Energy Regional Science Festival
is one of Texas ’ largest regional science fairs and one of just a few that
includes elementary students. More than 450 judges and 100 volunteers
from the City of Austin , local businesses, colleges, and
elementary/middle/high schools contribute annually to the event’s success.
For more information about the Austin Energy
Regional Science Festival or questions about volunteer opportunities, please

KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, is one of 12 stations
nationwide chosen to participate in the National STEM Video Game Challenge
grant. KLRU will bring local middle school and high school students together
with game developer mentors and education experts to create new games to
compete in this national contest.
Inspired by the Educate to Innovate Campaign,
President Obama’s initiative to promote a renewed focus on Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the National STEM Video
Game Challenge is a multi-year competition whose goal is to motivate
interest in STEM learning among America’s youth by tapping into students’
natural passion for playing and making video games.
In early 2012, KLRU will bring mentors from
Austin’s vibrant gaming community together with youth from one area middle
school and one high school. The teams of students will work to create games
to be entered into the national contest. Game developers who would like to
participate in the mentoring project should contact KLRU at 471-4811.

Farmers’ Market East

March 20th
weekly from 10 am to 1 pm on
Tuesdays
YMCA East, 5315 Ed Bluestein (Hwy.
183 at 51st Street). |
Sustainable Food Center (SFC), a local
non-profit with a mission of strengthening the local food system and
improving access, will open a fourth year-round market on March 20th to
complement its other three Austin area markets. The new location, SFC
Farmers’ Market East, will operate weekly from 10 am to 1 pm on Tuesdays at
the YMCA East, 5315 Ed Bluestein (Hwy. 183 at 51st Street).
“This farmers’ market will help fill the long-identified gap in northeast
Austin where access to fresh, local food is limited,” said SFC executive
director Ronda Rutledge. “This particular market will include incentives of
matching dollars to be given to shoppers who use their SNAP and WIC fruits
and vegetable benefits for purchases weekly. Our long term goal is to
provide these matching dollars at our other three markets as well.”
Along with operating the Double Dollar Incentive Program (DDIP) at the
market, the East market will also host a tasting tent that alternates weekly
with short cooking demos featuring recipes from The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina
Alegre™. The market is also located where green space, trees, a playing
field and playground are readily accessible.
There will be at least 10 vegetable and fruit farmers at this market, along
with several ranchers and farmers who will bring meats, eggs, honey and
dairy. In addition, the SFC Farmers’ Market East will consist of farmers’
market food vendors that sell breakfast foods such as tamales, tacos, and
more.
The March 20th kickoff will include grand opening ceremonies and special
music, cooking and tasting, children’s activities, YMCA activities, door
prizes and giveaways. The DDIP program at this market is made possible
through funding from St. David's Foundation, Texas Department of
Agriculture, USDA, FarmAid and Wholesome Wave.
SFC also operates the year-round SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown at Republic
Square Park (founded 2003), SFC Farmers’ Market at The Triangle (2007), and
SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley (2010). The markets Downtown and at
Sunset Valley operate Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm (changing to 8:30 am to 12:30
pm May-August for summer hours), and The Triangle market operates 3-7 pm
Wednesdays (changing to 4-8 pm for Mar-Sept for summer hours).
Sustainable Food Center envisions a food secure community where all children
and adults grow, share and prepare healthy, local food. For more information

MEND (Mind, Energy, Nutrition, Do
It)
YMCA of Austin
|
Registration is currently open for the
winter 2012 session of MEND (Mind, Energy, Nutrition, Do It), a FREE
childhood obesity intervention program for children and their
parents offered by the YMCA of Austin.
MEND is a 10-week program that uses techniques developed by health
experts to help children between 7 and 13 years of age who weigh
more than their ideal weight. In this program, children and parents
learn how to be fit and healthy with lasting results. MEND combines
three key elements of safe, effective weight management and
sustained lifestyle change: healthy eating, regular physical
activity, and behavior change. Children and families who attend the
MEND Program learn important skills and knowledge to help them
manage their weight and feel fitter, healthier, and happier for the
rest of their lives.
Children must between 7-13 years of age, be overweight or obese, and
not suffer from diabetes or debilitating asthma. The winter session
will start on Saturday, January 7, and Saturday, January 14, 2012.
Classes generally meet on Saturday mornings and one evening each
week. Locations include Rodriguez Elementary, Barbara Jordan
Elementary, and six other sites in North Austin, Central-East
Austin, Southeast Austin and Hays County.
MEND helps parents and children feel more confident and boost
self-esteem, get in shape playing fun games, set goals to reach and
maintain a healthy weight, learn to cook delicious and healthy
meals, turn conflict around food into family fun, and make new
friends.
The program is offered free of charge thanks to a grant from the St.
David's Foundation and a supplemental grant from the RGK Foundation.
More details and registration forms are available at
